Tapestry Board member and Native artist Lori Lambert (Abenaki, Mik’maq) has created a unique and limited line of Abenaki Arts earrings honoring the American mustang, and has donated them to Tapestry Institute for our autumn 2009 funding campaign. Each earring includes a beautifully carved fetish figure of a mustang with other lovely stones.
Rosie was a BLM mustang with an extraordinary long mane and a tail that swept the ground as her hooves skimmed across Sowbelly Canyon’s grass. Rosie was part of the Mustang Freedom Project, our early attempt to establish a truly wild but fenced-in herd of mustangs by taking unadoptable mustangs older than 10, otherwise doomed to live out their lives in muddy, bare pens. Kaylee and Pierce Brosnan understood the vision we had in a way no one else did. They funded the initiation of the Project that paid the BLM for 3 mustangs considered “not gentleable” and paid a hauler to bring them to Sowbelly. The Brosnans sponsored one horse and named her Rosie, after her beautiful red-chestnut coat.
Both Rosie and an older mare foaled in the spring, and the small herd of 5 weathered our catastrophic wildfire easily. But as winter approached, with burned pastures not really regrown and canyon roads slick with ash and mud after the onslaught of salvage loggers, we knew we couldn’t hay them regularly enough for the nursing mares to survive with their foals. We had to wean the babies before winter. In November, after months of careful work, we had just successfully separated the babies from the adults, when Rosie panicked from what we later realized was Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder rooted in the trauma of her own capture in the wild. She threw herself into an eight-foot high metal gate, breaking her neck, and died instantly. We grieved for her more deeply than we can say. Only after seeing her panic did we fully understand the trauma she’d experienced in the original round up.
Rosie is gone, but the program she began is alive. Rosie’s son grew up and sired a filly with a gentled mustang the next year, and today he, the filly and the mare form the nucleus of a herd of tamed mustangs who serve as ambassadors to the people in Tapestry’s horse programs. Our dream is that someday a herd of still-wild mustangs will live free on Tapestry land once again—and the dream Rosie lived so briefly will become a reality.

Dawn is Tapestry’s founder and first president (until late September of 2007). Shadow is her best friend, a black half-mustang, half-quarter horse who found her, instead of the other way around. For fifteen years he has known when she’d come home and waited at the gate, listened to her every conversation, and responded with astonishing insight and understanding every time she’s asked something extraordinary of him. In 1999, Shadow found a two-year old girl who’d wandered off into the Texas countryside (onto the farm where Dawn lived at the time), and down to a creek that was swift and deep and lay at the bottom of a twelve-foot trench. Shadow gently nuzzled the little girl all the way up from the creek to the front of the farmhouse and called Dawn’s attention to her, thereby saving the day and relieving the worst fears of the child’s parents and search parties. Dawn is certain he is Zorro’s horse Toronado in disguise, slipping out of his incognito persona whenever someone is in trouble.
