This photograph is good evidence that not all experiential data is reliable.
In other words, despite the adage, seeing is NOT always believing. The
photograph (without the red circle over it) was published in two national news magazines that reported the May
3, 1999, Oklahoma City tornadoes, with captions that suggested highway
underpasses are safe places to seek shelter from severe weather. In fact, three of the people who died in the Oklahoma City tornadoes had taken shelter under overpasses. A report by meteorologists from the National Weather Service and the National Severe Storms Laboratory details the extent of this tragedy caused by misinformation and misunderstanding on the part of the public. In several cases, so many cars stopped beneath overpasses that highways were completely blocked with large traffic jams, and people were trapped inside their cars in the path of an approaching tornado.
