With all of this devastation, you might think that nothing could grow back or that if it did, it took a very long time, perhaps waiting until the next spring.  We did still have black hillsides even a year after the fire.  But, amazingly, within one week of the fire, we had new growth starting.

At the same time that new growth was taking hold, the fire was still burning. This picture was taken almost two weeks after the fire swept through the canyon. Entire trees were burned, hence the hole in the ground, and their roots burned for many more weeks to come.  We were told that we weren’t safe from a flare up of the fire until we had a good covering of snow.
